Salida River Trail

Front Side, Tenderfoot, Little Rattler and Spiral Trail
A 4.4-mile loop in the Arkansas Hills north of downtown Salida, climbing the front face of Tenderfoot Mountain on singletrack, linking several connector trails, and returning via the Spiral Drive road. The loop gains around 600 feet, has good signage, and gives broad views of the Collegiate Peaks from the ridgeline. With 4.6 stars and 740+ AllTrails reviews, it's the single most-recommended intro hike from the trailhead at the east end of F Street.

Arkansas River Whitewater Rafting (Browns Canyon)
The most popular commercial whitewater rafting corridor in Colorado, running through Browns Canyon National Monument with Class III-IV rapids over a 14-mile stretch accessible from Salida and Buena Vista. Half-day trips cover 7 miles of the best rapids and are suitable for families with children 7 and older; full-day and multi-day trips extend further. Multiple outfitters operate from the Salida and Buena Vista put-ins.
Monarch Mountain
An independent ski resort 20 miles west of Salida at the top of Monarch Pass with 800 acres, 67 trails, and an average 350 inches of annual snowfall that falls entirely without snowmaking. The resort is family-sized rather than destination-tier, which means lift-ticket prices are well below Vail-tier resorts, the base lodge is a single building, and weekday crowds can be thin enough to ski back-to-back runs without lift lines. The hike-in Mirkwood Bowl holds fresh powder long after groomed trails have been tracked out.

Salida Historic Downtown
Colorado's largest National Historic District by building count — more than 100 turn-of-the-century brick and sandstone commercial buildings on a walkable 14-block grid.
