Norwottuck Rail Trail
A 10-mile paved multi-use path that follows a former railroad bed from Northampton east to Belchertown, crossing the Connecticut River on a dramatic converted rail bridge. It is flat, well-shaded, and wide enough for cyclists and walkers side by side. The river crossing alone is worth the trip.
Fitzgerald Lake Conservation Area Loop
A 936-acre city-owned conservation area north of downtown with nearly 10 miles of trails threading through upland forest, old pastures, marshes, and around a 40-acre lake. An elevated wildlife blind and a boardwalk dock make birdwatching excellent, and the North Farms Road trailhead offers an accessible paved loop.
Things to do
Iron Horse Music Hall
The intimate 230-seat room on Center Street that launched careers of Tracy Chapman, Suzanne Vega, and Dar Williams before the world knew their names. It remains the beating heart of NoHo's music scene — close enough to see the performers sweat, with a menu that lets you eat a proper dinner through the show.
Calvin Theatre
The 1,000-seat restored theater two doors from the Iron Horse hosts larger national touring acts — Jackson Browne, Mavis Staples, Ani DiFranco, and Ira Glass among recent bookings. The sight lines and acoustics are excellent for a theater of its size, and the balcony rail seats are prized.

Smith College Museum of Art
One of the finest college art museums in the country, holding more than 27,000 objects spanning ancient Egypt through contemporary work. The permanent collection includes paintings by Cézanne, Degas, Mary Cassatt, Georgia O'Keeffe, and George Seurat, and admission is permanently free thanks to an alumnae gift. Plan at least ninety minutes.
Frank Newhall Look Memorial Park
A 150-acre non-profit park in the Florence village of Northampton with a miniature steam railroad, pedal boats on the lake, a small wildlife zoo, mini-golf, a spray park, and miles of wooded walking trails. It feels unhurried in a way that city parks rarely do, and it is genuinely great for families.
