Walking or biking is demonstrably better for wildlife observation — you can stop anywhere, move slowly, and don't create the engine noise that flushes birds before you see them.
Marsh Edge Trail
A short 1/3-mile paved trail at Blackwater NWR running out to an observation boardwalk over the confluence of the Blackwater and Little Blackwater rivers, where tidal wetland meets the upland treeline and bird activity concentrates. It is a quick, flat walk, but the trail and its parking area close from roughly mid-winter through mid-summer — and at times entirely — to protect nesting eagles and herons, so confirm it is open before making the drive.

Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park Programs

Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge

Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center
A National Park Service visitor center near Church Creek — the landscape where Harriet Tubman was born and where she led enslaved people north — with multimedia exhibits that cover her childhood, her escapes, and her later work as a Union spy and suffragist in exceptional depth. The building's design deliberately places you in the flat, open marsh landscape that Tubman navigated by starlight, which makes the exhibit more than a museum visit.
