Zürich's grand institution at Bellevue, where Zürcher Geschnetzeltes and chateaubriand are served under original Picassos, Chagalls and Miros collected by the founding family. Writers and bankers have kept the same wood-paneled rooms full for a century. Go for the full old-world service ritual — dishes finished tableside, waiters who have worked the room for decades.
La Rôtisserie
The riverside dining room of the Storchen hotel, with tables looking straight across the Limmat to the Rathaus and Grossmünster. The kitchen does polished French-leaning classics with Swiss ingredients, but the reason to book is the terrace directly over the water — one of the few places to eat properly while watching the riverboats slide past.

Uetliberg
Zürich's house mountain, rising straight from the city's western edge to a summit platform with the whole panorama: lake, old town, and the Alpine wall on the horizon. The classic local workout is the climb from Triemli through forest switchbacks — under an hour up — with the lookout tower at the top adding another thirty meters of view. A train runs to the summit for anyone who'd rather only walk down.
Planetenweg Uetliberg - Felsenegg
The ridge walk from Uetliberg summit to Felsenegg along a scale model of the solar system — the Sun at the start, Pluto near the end, each step covering millions of kilometers. About six kilometers of mostly level ridgeline with the lake glittering below the whole way, ending at a cable car that floats you down to Adliswil. The single most repeatable hike in Zürich.

Kunsthaus Zürich
Switzerland's largest art museum, spanning Giacometti's largest collection anywhere, heavyweight Impressionists, Munch beyond Oslo, and a contemporary wing in the Chipperfield-designed extension across the square. It's the kind of collection a city ten times the size would brag about, and you can do it justice in a half day.
Landesmuseum Zürich
The Swiss National Museum, in a fairy-tale castle of a building directly behind the main station, walking you through everything from prehistoric lake dwellers to Swiss design classics. The history galleries are unusually well staged — more storytelling than vitrine parade — and the brutalist concrete extension wing is an architecture exhibit in itself.
Landmarks & sights
Grossmünster
The twin-towered Romanesque church that defines Zürich's skyline, and the place where Zwingli launched the Swiss Reformation. The real payoff is the Karlsturm tower climb — 187 narrow spiral steps to the best panorama of the old town, the lake and, on clear days, the Alps. Down below, the choir windows by Augusto Giacometti and Sigmar Polke's agate windows reward a slow loop inside.
Fraumünster
A slender-spired former abbey church across the river from the Grossmünster, famous for the five choir windows Marc Chagall made in his 80s — glowing blue, green and gold Bible scenes that feel more like paintings than glass. Augusto Giacometti's huge north-transept window is the other reason to linger. Small, quick, and genuinely moving even if churches aren't your thing.
