Arkansas River Trail
Wichita's signature urban path along both banks of the Arkansas River through downtown - wide, paved, lit at night, and threaded past the Keeper of the Plains, Exploration Place, and the pedestrian bridges. The classic loop from Exploration Place over the bridges runs about three flat miles.
Central Riverside Park
Wichita's oldest park, on a bend of the Little Arkansas in the Riverside neighborhood - shaded walking paths, a gazebo, and a small free wildlife exhibit of Kansas animals that kids treat as a mini zoo. The right under-a-mile stroll when you want trees and water without a drive.

Sedgwick County Zoo
One of the country's most respected zoos, with more than 3,000 animals and an elephant habitat among the largest anywhere - the herd here is a point of citywide pride. It's Kansas's biggest outdoor attraction, and it earns the title on conservation work, not just scale.
Tanganyika Wildlife Park
Interactive wildlife park just west of the city in Goddard, built around close encounters - feeding lemurs, giraffes, and lorikeets instead of viewing them across moats. It's a different product than the zoo: fewer animals, far more contact, and kids leave electrified.

The Keeper of the Plains
A 44-foot steel sculpture by Kiowa-Comanche artist Blackbear Bosin, standing where the Big and Little Arkansas rivers meet. The plaza around it doubles as an open-air exhibit on the Plains tribes, and two cable-stayed pedestrian bridges put you right over the water. Locals treat the nightly fire-pot lighting as a free show.
Botanica Wichita
Eighteen acres of themed gardens tucked into the Riverside neighborhood, ranked among the best botanical gardens in the country despite the modest admission. The butterfly house and the Chinese Garden of Friendship are the standouts, and the children's garden is engineered for kids who need to burn energy.
