Moderate terrain with rocky sections; the southern ridge has good views across the Saugatuck watershed. The preserve is the largest natural area in Fairfield County and this loop covers its most scenic section.
Sherwood Island State Park Coastal Trail
A 2-mile coastal loop through Connecticut's first state park — beach walking, a salt marsh boardwalk, and long open views of Long Island Sound. Flat and accessible; the salt marsh section is the most ecologically interesting and least-walked part of the park. The boardwalk trail through the marsh takes about 30 minutes and gives a different experience from the beach walk.

Sherwood Island State Park
Connecticut's first state park, a 238-acre Long Island Sound beach and wetland preserve just east of downtown Westport — two beaches, a salt marsh boardwalk trail, a nature center, and the best open-water swimming access in Fairfield County. The west beach tends to be slightly less crowded; the nature center has excellent tidal pool interpretive displays. The park flanks Sherwood Mill Pond, which hosts shorebirds in migration.
Compo Beach
Westport's central waterfront park and beach on Long Island Sound — lifeguard-covered swimming, a bandshell, sports courts, a skateboard park, and an off-leash dog area that makes it the social hub of Westport outdoors. The July Fourth fireworks here are a town institution; the beach walk toward the breakwater gives the best open Sound views in Westport.
