Shingobee Recreation Area Trail
A 2.3-mile loop through mixed aspen, birch and pine forest five miles southwest of Walker, winding around two small lakes and along the Shingobee River in terrain that feels much more intimate and secluded than the distance suggests. The river crossings and lake views come in rapid succession on the north half of the loop, and the birding — particularly warblers in spring migration — is outstanding. One of the best short hikes in the Chippewa National Forest.
North Country Trail — Chippewa National Forest
The segment of the 4,600-mile North Country National Scenic Trail that runs through the Chippewa National Forest near Walker, passing through tall pine and birch forest, crossing bridges over the meandering Shingobee River, and skirting multiple lake edges. It is walkable in segments from a trailhead on Highway 34, with the 7-mile section north of the highway offering the most lake and river interaction.

Leech Lake Fishing Guides
Booking a local guide for a half or full day on Leech Lake is the single most efficient way to understand what makes this water special — guides who have fished it for decades know the seasonal walleye movements, the productive mud flats and weed edges, and the musky spots that aren't on any map. Multiple licensed guide services operate out of Walker and can be booked through the Chamber or directly.
Moondance Jammin' Country Music Festival
One of the largest country music festivals in the Midwest, drawing 20,000-plus people to the Leech Lake waterfront in Walker over a July weekend for three days of nationally touring country acts on a lakefront stage. The setting — open water behind the stage, pines on three sides — is genuinely spectacular for an outdoor concert, and the Walker area camp and cabin infrastructure around it makes the logistics manageable.

Leech Lake
Minnesota's third-largest lake at 102,000 acres with 195 miles of shoreline, Leech Lake is the reason Walker exists and the reason people keep coming back — exceptional walleye and musky fishing, miles of open water for boating and swimming, and a setting inside the Chippewa National Forest that makes every direction you look feel like a wilderness. Local fishing guides can dramatically improve your odds on the walleye, which has a national reputation.
Chippewa National Forest
The largest National Forest east of the Rockies, covering 1.6 million acres of northern Minnesota with over 1,300 lakes, 900 miles of rivers and streams, and one of the highest densities of nesting bald eagles in the lower 48. The forest surrounds Walker on multiple sides and is accessible from dozens of trailheads, campgrounds and canoe launches within the service radius.
