Palisades Tahoe
The former Squaw Valley, a 1960 Winter Olympics host and one of the largest ski areas in the country, now linked to Alpine Meadows. In summer the aerial tram runs to High Camp at 8,000 feet for views, an Olympic museum, and ridge hikes.
Northstar California Resort
A family-leaning resort above town with well-groomed terrain, a pedestrian village, and a base-area ice rink. It skews easier and more polished than the steeper Tahoe resorts, with shops and dining tucked into the village.
Landmarks & sights
Donner Memorial State Park
The lakefront park at the east end of Donner Lake, built around the story of the 1846 Donner Party and the emigrant crossing. The Pioneer Monument and the high-tech Emigrant Trail Museum anchor it, and a flat self-guided loop passes the actual cabin sites.
Donner Lake
The glacial lake just west of town, ringed by granite and far less crowded than Lake Tahoe. The east end has the state park and calm swimming water; the public piers and the West End Beach are where families spend whole summer days.
