The most celebrated restaurant on Sullivan's Island — an Italian-accented coastal kitchen with Michelin recognition and a short rib gnocchi that has the whole Charleston food press talking. Chef Jason Stanhope (formerly of FIG) brings serious technique to housemade pastas and local seafood without making it feel precious. The back patio is one of the nicest places to eat dinner in the Charleston area.

The island's most iconic gathering spot — named for Edgar Allan Poe, who was stationed at Fort Moultrie just down the road and set his story 'The Gold Bug' here. The walls are covered in Poe memorabilia, the burgers are legitimately excellent, and the outdoor patio is exactly where you want to be on a warm evening. It's both a local bar and a tourist landmark that manages to be genuinely good at being both.

Aaron Siegel's cheffy take on Lowcountry barbecue — smoked meats with more technique than the average pit stop, plus the famous frozen Gamechanger cocktail and some of the best smoked chicken wings you'll find in South Carolina. The Sullivan's Island location is the most chill of the Home Team spots, with a family-friendly outdoor area and a bar that gets lively on game days.

The island's best spot for raw bar and fresh oceanic plates — oysters, poke bowls, mussel toast, seared tuna, and scallops in a bright tropical-themed space with an inclusive drinks menu. More refined than the island's burger-and-BBQ options, but still relaxed enough for post-beach dinner. The fish sourcing is consistently good.

A laid-back coastal Mexican cantina with an open-air feel that's perfectly calibrated for ending a beach day. Housemade chips, shrimp tacos, cauliflower tacos, and margaritas that don't require much justification. Not complicated, not fancy — just genuinely good casual coastal food with a crowd that's clearly having a good time.

Sullivan's Island's most quietly upscale dinner option — a focused menu of classic seafood and coastal comfort food in a well-designed space with a spacious Middle Street patio. It fills the niche between The Obstinate Daughter's ambition and Poe's Tavern's casualness, and does it well. A reliable choice for a nice dinner when you couldn't get an Obstinate Daughter reservation.

Strong Sunday brunch program, fresh oysters, and the kind of food that feels like it belongs exactly here. A good alternative to The Obstinate Daughter for a lower-key evening from the same culinary pedigree.

A maritime forest path connecting Station 16 to the eastern end of the island through one of the most intact maritime forests in the Charleston area — live oaks, saw palmetto, yaupon holly, and the dense salt-tolerant understory that defines this ecosystem. Boardwalks, benches, and observation areas make it accessible to all fitness levels, and the transition from shaded forest to open beach access is the best payoff.

Sullivan's Island is 2.5 miles long and flat — an ideal bike loop accessible to any fitness level. Middle Street runs the full length through the restaurant and residential core, while Atlantic Avenue provides the beach-side return. Bike rentals through Sealand Sports make this the most popular way to see the whole island in a couple of hours without a car.

Sullivan's Island's highest point (such as it is) offers a view that's modest in elevation but genuinely useful in context — the Waterway, Ben Sawyer Bridge, and the full sweep of Charleston Harbor visible from a small grass park that doubles as a sunset gathering spot for locals. A five-minute detour that adds perspective on the geography of this barrier island.

The National Park Service runs excellent living history events at Fort Moultrie — cannon firings, uniformed ranger demonstrations of Revolutionary War and Civil War era military life, and special programming around key historical dates. The June 28th anniversary events (the 1776 Battle of Sullivan's Island) are particularly worthwhile. A surprisingly engaging and well-produced historical experience.

Two blocks of Middle Street in the center of the island concentrate more excellent restaurants per square foot than almost anywhere in the Charleston metro — The Obstinate Daughter, Poe's Tavern, Home Team BBQ, Mex 1, The Longboard, and more within a five-minute walk of each other. On summer evenings the whole strip comes alive in a low-key, no-pretension beach-town way that Charleston's touristy spots have largely lost.

More than a burger bar — Poe's Tavern is a deliberate tribute to Sullivan's Island's most famous temporary resident. The walls are covered in Poe manuscripts, quotes, and illustrations; the burgers and tacos are named after his works; and the bartenders actually know the Poe connection. A visitor who arrives knowing 'The Gold Bug' and 'The Raven' will get more out of it than a casual drop-in, but both leave happy.

After dark on Sullivan's Island beach, ghost crabs come out in force — white, fast, and mesmerizing when caught in a flashlight beam. A Sullivan's Island tradition among families and locals alike: bring flashlights, walk the beach after 9pm in summer, and watch the crabs freeze and scatter. Completely free, completely memorable, and the kind of beach experience that no resort-packaged activity can replicate.

A 171-year arc of American coastal defense in one remarkable site — from the palmetto-log fort where colonists repulsed a British fleet in 1776 to WWII concrete gun emplacements. Edgar Allan Poe served here in the 1820s and set 'The Gold Bug' on the island. The National Park Service does an outstanding job presenting the layered military history, and the views of Charleston Harbor mouth from the gun emplacements are excellent.

Sullivan's Island's branch library occupies a former military barracks and is dedicated to Poe, who was stationed at Fort Moultrie from 1827-28 under his assumed name Edgar A. Perry. His island experience directly inspired 'The Gold Bug,' set on the island. The library maintains a Poe collection and the historic building itself is worth seeing. An only-in-Sullivan's-Island detail that makes the island feel genuinely literary.

Three miles of uncrowded Atlantic beach backed by no hotels, no condominiums, and no commercial development — just private homes set back behind the dune line. The sand is wide and white, the swimming is safe at most tide stages, and the ship traffic entering Charleston Harbor makes for a constantly changing spectacle offshore. One of the finest beaches in the Charleston metro, and one of the least-crowded.

The newest lighthouse in the contiguous United States (1962) and one of only two American lighthouses that are air-conditioned — a fact that says something about both South Carolina weather and the building's era. The aluminum diamond-shaped tower is an unusual mid-century design visible for miles. The lighthouse grounds and surrounding beach at the island's east end provide the best views of Fort Sumter across the harbor entrance.
