Hen of the Wood
Waterbury's farm-to-table anchor — James Beard-nominated and relocated to a bright, open-kitchen room in downtown Waterbury with a bar and patio the old mill space never had. The menu rewrites itself daily around what local farms bring in; the mushroom toast is the one constant people order. This is the special-occasion dinner of the trip.
Doc Ponds
The casual, record-playing sibling of Hen of the Wood, built around a deep draft list and an actual vinyl collection behind the bar. The smash burger and the smoked-trout dishes are the regulars' picks, and it is the default apres-ski spot on the Mountain Road. No reservations, but the waitlist moves.

Stowe Recreation Path
The paved 5.3-mile greenway running from behind the village church along the West Branch river out toward the mountain, crossing it on footbridges. It is flat, stroller and bike friendly, and threads past swimming holes and picnic spots. The one walk in town anyone can do regardless of fitness.
Stowe Pinnacle Trail
A 2.8-mile round trip to a rocky knob with a panoramic view of Mount Mansfield, the Worcester Range, and the whole Stowe valley. Steep and rooty in the second half but short enough for a half-day. The best view-to-effort ratio of any hike near town.
Things to do
Ben & Jerry's Factory
The original Vermont ice cream factory in Waterbury, where the guided tour walks you over the production floor and ends in the flavor-sample room. It is unapologetically a tourist stop, but the tour is short, cheap, and genuinely fun with kids. The flavor graveyard out back is the offbeat part most people miss.
Cold Hollow Cider Mill
A working cider mill on the Waterbury Route 100 corridor where you can watch the rack-and-cloth press run and eat fresh cider donuts made on site. The country store sells Vermont products and free cider samples. A solid low-key, rainy-day, with-kids stop between Ben and Jerry's and Stowe.
Landmarks & sights
Stowe Community Church
The white-steepled 1863 meetinghouse anchoring Main Street, and the most photographed building in the state. It is a working non-denominational church, not a museum, so the draw is the exterior framed against the mountains. Stop here first to orient yourself in the village.
Smugglers' Notch State Park
The narrow mountain pass where Route 108 threads between thousand-foot cliffs, named for the contraband moved through here during the 1808 trade embargo. The road is closed to cars in winter and the switchbacks are too tight for buses or trailers. Come for the boulders, ice formations, and trailheads packed into a half mile.
