Saint Louis Canyon Trail
An out-and-back to the park's most dramatic slot-style canyon, ending at a plunge waterfall that drops into a bowl ringed by 50-foot mossy walls. It's set apart from the main lodge cluster, which keeps it moderately quieter than the western trails. The canyon terminus has a cave-like quality even in summer and freezes into a spectacular ice formation in winter that draws photographers specifically for it.

Starved Rock Eagle Watch Weekend
Each January the park hosts an Eagle Watch Weekend built around the annual congregation of bald eagles at the Starved Rock Lock and Dam, where open water below the dam concentrates fish and draws dozens of eagles from the north. Illinois ranks second only to Alaska for winter bald eagle density, and on peak days 30 to 40 birds are visible from the Illinois Waterway Visitor Center's heated interior.
