Crater Lake Trail
A 3.7-mile round-trip hike from the Maroon Lake trailhead into the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness, climbing 695 feet through meadows and aspen groves to a glacially carved lake at the base of the Bells. Aspen Snowmass Ski Resort
Four interconnected mountains — Snowmass (3,000+ acres), Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, and Buttermilk — covering more terrain variety than any other destination in Colorado. Snowmass is the family mountain with mile-long groomers and terrain for every level; Aspen Highlands has some of the most serious expert terrain in the country; Aspen Mountain is the après hub. One lift ticket covers all four.
Lost Forest at Elk Camp
A summer adventure park at the top of the Elk Camp Gondola on Snowmass, with the Breathtaker Alpine Coaster (a mile of elevated track at 28 mph through forest), climbing walls, ropes course, disc golf, fishing ponds, and mountain biking trails. The gondola ride up is itself worth doing for the valley views. Oriented toward families but the coaster does not card adults for their enthusiasm.
Landmarks & sights
Maroon Bells Scenic Area
Two 14,000-foot maroon-streaked peaks rising above a glacial lake — the most photographed mountain scene in North America. The lake's early-morning reflection of the peaks is what every photograph is trying to capture, though the surrounding Wilderness Area has more than 100 miles of trails extending far beyond the viewpoint crowds.
Anderson Ranch Arts Center
A working nonprofit arts campus on five acres in Snowmass Village, offering over 140 summer workshops in ceramics, printmaking, photography, furniture design, and painting — but open to the public as a free walk-around even if you are not enrolled. Internationally recognized artists do residencies here. The galleries rotate exhibitions, there is a good café for lunch, and the vibe is genuinely creative rather than tourist-oriented.
