Restaurants & cafés
The Lark
Anchor of the Funk Zone food scene since 2013, in the converted Larco fish market with vaulted timber ceilings and a wood-fired hearth running through nearly every plate. Michelin recognized, lively, the city's modern-California showcase.
Loquita Santa Barbara
Michelin Bib Gourmand Spanish tapas restaurant at the gateway to the Funk Zone, with wood-fired paella, hot-and-cold tapas, and one of the few seriously sherry-focused bars in California.
Trails & outdoors
Cold Spring Trail
Montecito's classic 2-mile out-and-back hike following a perennial creek up to a small waterfall and the Cold Spring narrows. Shaded, family-friendly first mile, harder if you continue to Montecito Peak (3,214 ft).
Inspiration Point Trail (Tunnel Trail)
A 3.5-mile out-and-back climb from Tunnel Road behind the Mission to a panoramic overlook of Santa Barbara and the Channel Islands. The locals' iconic city-view hike.
Things to do
Santa Barbara Museum of Art
Downtown art museum with collections of European, American, and Asian art and recently-renovated galleries on State Street. Compact, walkable, the city's afternoon-rainy-day anchor.
Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History
Mission Canyon museum next to the Botanic Garden, with a planetarium, a blue whale skeleton on the lawn, and dioramas of California ecosystems. Family-anchor museum that holds up for adults too.
Landmarks & sights
Old Mission Santa Barbara
The 10th California mission (founded 1786), nicknamed the 'Queen of the Missions' for its twin-tower Roman temple facade. Still a working Franciscan friary; the Sacred Garden cloister, museum, and cemetery are open to the public.
Santa Barbara County Courthouse
1929 Spanish Colonial Revival masterpiece — a working courthouse you can walk into for free, climb the 85-foot El Mirador clock tower, and stand in the famous floor-to-ceiling Mural Room. The closest thing California has to a Granada palace.
