A family barbecue joint that has been smoking everything over hickory wood since the early '80s and consistently lands at the top of every local best-BBQ list. The pulled pork and fall-off-the-bone ribs are the headline, but the baked beans loaded with sausage and ham are what regulars quietly obsess over.
The Cozy Inn
A six-stool slider shack downtown that has been griddling tiny onion-smothered burgers since 1922, making it one of Kansas's most famous burger counters. There is almost nowhere to sit and the only sides are chips and canned soda, but that is the entire point.

Salina Levee Trail
A flat, wide crushed-stone path running atop the flood-control levee along the Smoky Hill River, now stretching far enough to nearly circle the city. It is the locals' default for an easy walk, run or bike with minimal road crossings and elevated river views.
Lakewood Park
An easy network of mostly flat trails around a lake and the Smoky Hill River channel on the city's northeast edge, with an interpretive nature trail, butterfly garden and lots of birds. It feels like the country while still being in town, and it is the most family- and wheelchair-friendly walk in Salina.

Rolling Hills Zoo
A 160-acre zoo west of the city with snow leopards, Amur tigers, giraffes and red pandas in unusually spacious enclosures, plus an attached wildlife museum of hundreds of full-mount taxidermy animals. It is the region's marquee family day out and easily fills a half day.
Stiefel Theatre for the Performing Arts
The restored 1931 Art Deco theater downtown is also the area's main live venue, pulling in touring concerts, comedy and plays to an intimate room with no bad seat. Catching a show here is the quintessential Salina evening out.

Smoky Hill Museum
Free regional-history museum tucked into the restored 1907 Salina Public Library, a block off Santa Fe Avenue. It tells central-Kansas settlement, railroad, and Native history through hands-on stations rather than glass cases, and the rotating special exhibits give locals a reason to keep coming back.
Stiefel Theatre for the Performing Arts
A 1931 Art Deco movie palace, originally the Fox-Watson, rescued by a nonprofit and run as the region's main concert hall. It is intimate enough that there is no bad seat, and the sight-lines and acoustics punch far above what a town this size has any right to.
