Ferncliff Peninsula Trail
A 1.7-mile loop encircling the Ferncliff Peninsula, where the Youghiogheny River bends around a forested spit containing old-growth hemlocks and a federally designated National Natural Landmark. One of the most ecologically intact forest parcels in western Pennsylvania, accessible on a trail that keeps it achievable for most fitness levels. The river views and tree canopy are the draws.
Great Allegheny Passage — Ohiopyle to Connellsville
The most scenic segment of the GAP trail, running 15 miles north from Ohiopyle along the Youghiogheny River gorge to Connellsville on a converted rail bed. The grade is nearly flat throughout, the river stays in view for much of the route, and the absence of road crossings makes it feel more remote than it is. Equally good for cyclists and runners doing an out-and-back.

Laurel Highlands River Tours
One of the established whitewater outfitters running guided raft trips on the Youghiogheny River through Ohiopyle State Park. Handles full logistics — gear, safety briefing, river guide, and shuttle — for both the Lower Yough (Class III-IV) and the calmer Middle Yough. The largest operation in town with booking infrastructure to handle same-week reservations when space allows.
Fallingwater Tours
Timed guided tours through the interior of Wright's masterpiece on the Bear Run Nature Reserve, offered by the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy year-round (closed Wednesdays). The in-depth tour takes about an hour inside the house and is the only way to access the terraces and primary rooms — exterior-only visits miss most of what makes the building worth seeing. Tour guides are knowledgeable and crowds are kept small by the timed-entry format.
Landmarks & sights
Fallingwater
Frank Lloyd Wright's most celebrated private residence, built over a waterfall for the Kaufmann family on the Bear Run Nature Reserve. The house isn't merely photogenic — walking through the cantilevered terraces and low-ceilinged rooms explains things about Wright's philosophy that no book can convey. One of the few places where the reality exceeds the photographs.
Kentuck Knob
A second Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian home in the Laurel Highlands, built for the Hagan family and now open for tours on a wooded ridge above Ohiopyle. Less famous than Fallingwater, which means shorter lines and a more intimate experience. The sculpture garden on the grounds adds a contemporary dimension to what is otherwise a mid-century private-house tour.
