Carleton Arboretum Outer Loop
A five-mile moderate loop through the outer edges of the Cowling Arboretum, covering oak savanna, Cannon River floodplain, and open prairie before climbing to the upland forest sections at the northeast corner. Terrain alternates between gravel and packed dirt, with the river section flat and smooth and the northeast stretch gaining some elevation through unshaded grass. The most varied single walk in the arboretum system.
Carleton Arboretum Inner Loop
A nearly five-mile easy loop through the interior of the Cowling Arboretum on wide, well-maintained paths threading through a mix of forest, wetland, meadow, and river-edge habitat. Quieter than the outer loop and better suited to slower walks, birding, and cross-country skiing in winter. The arboretum's Turtle Pond and Lower Lyman Lake are accessible from this route.

Loon Liquors Distillery & Pizzeria
A working craft distillery set up in a historic 1916 building near downtown Northfield, producing certified organic spirits including Minnesota's first peat-smoked whiskey and milling its own flour for brick-oven pizzas. The cocktail room has 120 seats and serves the full spirit lineup alongside craft cocktails and a rotating pizza menu. Tours of the production floor are available, making it the most genuinely unusual outing in the city.
Northfield Arts Guild
A two-building downtown arts center on Division Street presenting community theater productions, a rotating gallery of locally-made ceramics, glass, prints, and paintings, and the Purple Door Youth Theater program. Northfield History Center
The Scriver Building on Bridge Square houses the fully restored vault and teller counter of the First National Bank of Northfield, site of the September 1876 James-Younger Gang raid that ended Jesse James's career as an outlaw. Original artifacts from the shootout are on display alongside ledgers open to the date of the robbery.
Cowling Arboretum at Carleton College
An 880-acre open-access natural area south and west of the Carleton College campus, covering tallgrass prairie, bur oak savanna, Cannon River floodplain, and dense upland forest, threaded by 15 miles of free public trails. Ranked by Runner's Magazine as the top running venue in Minnesota, it is also exceptional for birding, wildflower walks, and cross-country skiing. The scale of the landscape is surprising this close to a small college town.
