Bathers Way Coastal Walk
The 6km paved coastal path from Nobbys Beach south to Merewether Baths — flat, family-friendly, lit at night, with all the city's headland sites threaded along it. The single best orientation walk you can do in Newcastle.
Yuelarbah Walking Track (Glenrock SCA)
A 6km return rainforest-to-beach walk through Glenrock State Conservation Area south of Merewether — from the Burwood Road carpark down through eucalypt gully to Glenrock Lagoon and Dudley Beach. The proper bush trail closest to the city.

Newcastle Museum
The free city museum in the converted Honeysuckle Railway Workshop — interactive science gallery, the supernova social-history exhibit on Newcastle's working-port identity, and the steelworks reconstruction. Two-hour visit, kid-friendly, on the boardwalk.
Newcastle Art Gallery
The civic gallery with a strong Australian collection including Brett Whiteley and John Olsen, currently in its expansion phase with a major redevelopment increasing floor space. Free entry and a small but well-edited shop.

Nobbys Head and Lighthouse
The 1858 whitewashed lighthouse on the volcanic headland that guards Newcastle Harbour's mouth — paved walk out from Nobbys Beach, free dawn-to-dusk, with a panorama that takes in the breakwater, port and Stockton across the channel. The first stop any local will tell you to make.
Newcastle Memorial Walk (ANZAC Memorial Walk)
A 450-metre steel walkway hung off the cliff between Strzelecki Lookout and Bar Beach, opened on the 2015 ANZAC centenary with the silhouettes of 11,000 Hunter Valley soldiers cut into the rail. Free, exposed and unmissable — the engineering and the view are equally the point.
