Endless Wall Trail

Long Point Trail
A 3-mile out-and-back moderate hike through oak and hickory forest to a clifftop sandstone promontory 700 feet directly above the New River — one of the cleanest, most dramatically placed overlooks in the park and consistently rated among the best moderate hikes in the mid-Atlantic. The trail has minimal elevation change in the forest approach, then arrives at an exposed point with a straight-down view into the gorge.

Whitewater Rafting (Lower New River)
The Lower New River offers some of the finest whitewater rafting in the eastern US with continuous Class III–V rapids over a 14-mile stretch that draws rafters from across the country. The gorge environment at river level is completely different from the overlooks above — you understand the scale of the canyon only from inside it, watching the bridge arch far overhead while navigating Class IV drops.
New River Gorge Rock Climbing
One of the country's premier rock climbing destinations with 1,600+ established routes on ultra-hard quartz sandstone cliffs ranging from 30 to 120 feet — spanning sport climbing, traditional climbing, and bouldering across 60 miles of cliff band. The rock quality is exceptional, and the climbing community centered around Fayetteville and the national park is welcoming and knowledgeable.
Landmarks & sights
New River Gorge Bridge
The longest steel arch bridge in the western hemisphere spans 876 feet above the New River, completed in 1977 after a remarkable 3-year construction effort that included workers dangling above the gorge on temporary catwalks. The scale registers differently from different vantage points — the canyon rim overlook shows the arch from above, the Bridge Walk tour puts you on the catwalk beneath the road deck, and the river below makes the height feel absolute.
Grandview Overlook
One of the most impressive viewpoints in the eastern US, where the New River carves a dramatic horseshoe bend 1,400 feet below a sandstone overlook in the southern section of the park. Park rangers consistently rank this as the single most spectacular view in the national park — the river appears as a silver ribbon at the bottom of a deep green canyon, and in autumn the gorge fills with color that rivals any New England foliage destination.
