The current is gentle and the water dark with tannins, so paddling is accessible even for beginners. Herons, egrets, turtles, and the occasional alligator are routine sightings.
Lake Fausse Pointe State Park Canoe Trails
Set in the Atchafalaya Basin along a network of cypress and tupelo swamps about twenty miles east of New Iberia, this state park offers the most dramatic water-trail paddling accessible from town. The marked canoe trails wind through bald cypress flooded with Spanish moss and pitcher plants, with alligators, roseate spoonbills, and wood ducks as regular company. Canoe and kayak rentals are available on-site so no gear is required.

Jungle Gardens
Edward Avery McIlhenny created this 170-acre botanical preserve on Avery Island in the early twentieth century, planting camellias, irises, and ancient live oaks around a centuries-old Buddha brought from China. The bird sanctuary, called Bird City, has drawn nesting egrets and roseate spoonbills for over a hundred years and remains one of the best casual wildlife stops in the state. Drive slowly and stop often.
