A quiet 1.5-mile loop through 263 acres of mixed woods, prairie, and wetland in the Three Oaks area — floodplain views, a 5-acre fishing lake, and free entry make this the under-the-radar hiking park between New Buffalo and Three Oaks. The adjacent mountain bike loop uses separate trails so hikers have the path to themselves.

A grain-to-glass organic distillery in Three Oaks doing serious whiskey, gin, and vodka production with a full restaurant and event space attached. The tours are genuinely interesting if you care about how spirits get made.

A craft brewery operating inside a restored Civil War-era church, making wood-fired pizza alongside small-batch craft beers. The setting is genuinely unusual and the combination actually works.

A New Buffalo ice cream institution open since 1987 — dozens of flavors, pig-themed everything, and a line in summer that tells you exactly how good it is. The logical end to any day at the beach.

Southwest Michigan is genuine wine country — the fruit-growing belt that runs along Lake Michigan produces Riesling, Cabernet Franc, and Pinot Noir that compete with more famous regions. A dozen tasting rooms are within 30 miles of New Buffalo.

The main beach in New Buffalo — wide sand, a harbor marina backdrop, and calm Lake Michigan swimming. Lifeguards on duty in summer and one of the easier-to-park beaches on the southwest Michigan coast.

A small historic village 8 miles inland from New Buffalo with Journeyman Distillery, some good shops, and a walkable main street. Journeyman is grain-to-glass organic spirits and a proper food menu — it alone justifies the drive.

About 12 miles north, Warren Dunes has a 260-foot dune, three miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, and six miles of hiking trails. The dune climb is harder than it looks and better than expected.

A National Natural Landmark about 6 miles from downtown New Buffalo — 300 acres of old-growth beech-maple forest with 125-foot trees and 3.5 miles of trails along the Galien River. One of the last old-growth forests in Michigan.

The original scenic route along the southwest Michigan coast — galleries, farm stands, wineries, and small villages from New Buffalo to South Haven. Harbert Swedish Bakery, Greenbush Brewing, and a dozen art galleries dot the route.
