A family-run hillside taverna in the village of Melanes where the produce — roosters, rabbits, lamb, vegetables, cheeses — is raised on the family's own farm. The slow-cooked rooster in tomato sauce and grilled local sausage are the benchmarks against which most other meals on the island get quietly measured.
Doukato
A dinner-only restaurant set in the stone courtyard of a 16th-century monastery in Naxos Town, serving elevated takes on Naxian recipes — gouna (wind-dried mackerel), saganaki wrapped in kataifi, rabbit with local wine. The setting is one of the best in the old town, intimate and lit by candlelight after dark.

Mount Zas (Zeus) via Aria Spring
The highest peak in the Cyclades at 1,003 meters, reached from the Aria Spring trailhead near Filoti on a 5km round-trip that passes the stalactite Cave of Zeus and finishes on a 360-degree summit with views to a dozen neighboring islands on clear days. The upper section is steep, rocky, and sometimes requires hands.
Byzantine Park Trail (Halki Loop)
A circular walk from Halki threading through ten Byzantine churches, two medieval defensive towers, and olive groves in the Tragea valley — one of the densest concentrations of Byzantine heritage in the Greek islands, walkable on a marked trail without a guide. The full loop covers around 12km but splits cleanly into two shorter half-days via the village of Moni.

Vallindras Kitron Distillery
The island's oldest operating citron distillery, established in 1896 and still run by the same family in a 19th-century building in Halki village. Kitron — a liqueur distilled from the leaves of the citron tree — is produced nowhere else in the world and carries a European PDO; the distillery is the best place to understand why it tastes the way it does.
Cine Naxos (Open-Air Cinema)
An open-air cinema operating in a garden setting 15 minutes' walk from Naxos Town's main square, screening recent releases and international films across two nightly sessions in summer. A genuine Cycladic island-evening ritual that exists partly because of the soft summer light lingering too late for an earlier show.
Landmarks & sights
Portara (Temple of Apollo)
A massive 6th-century BC marble gateway standing alone on the islet of Palatia, connected to Naxos Town by a pedestrian causeway — the only portion ever completed of an ambitious temple to Apollo. The framing of the Aegean through its stone lintel at dusk is one of the most composed views in the Cyclades.
Kastro (Venetian Quarter)
The 13th-century hilltop fortress crowning Naxos Town, a tightly wound maze of arched lanes, Venetian tower houses, and a Catholic cathedral that has been inhabited continuously for seven centuries. The Archaeological Museum inside holds Cycladic marble figurines and Mycenaean finds spanning 5,000 years.
