Tigertail Beach Lagoon Walk to Sand Dollar Island
Starting from the Tigertail Beach parking area, this walk takes you through a tidal lagoon on foot, crossing to a sand spit that stretches three miles along the Gulf with almost no development in sight. The lagoon is prime territory for wading birds and shelling, and the far end of Sand Dollar Island is where the serious shell collectors congregate. The crossing ranges from knee-deep to waist-deep depending on the tide.
Otter Mound Preserve
A three-acre preserve at the southern tip of Marco Island protecting a Calusa shell mound and a rare tropical hardwood hammock that largely disappeared during the island's development. The mulch pathway loops through labeled native trees and reaches the highest natural point on Marco Island, with 57 recorded bird species including several warblers that find the hammock during migration. Tigertail Beach
Marco Island's wildest public beach is really two beaches in one: a sheltered lagoon side with kayak and paddleboard rentals, then a shallow wade across to Sand Dollar Island, three miles of shell-strewn Gulf sand that few resort guests ever reach. Birders come specifically for the over 175 species documented here, including bald eagles nesting above the boardwalk tower.
South Marco Beach
The southernmost public beach access on Marco delivers some of the widest white sand on the Gulf Coast with noticeably fewer crowds than the hotel strip further north. The wide, gently sloping shoreline is ideal for long sunrise and sunset walks, and the shelling can be excellent after heavy Gulf swells.
