The Golden Stag
Manistee's most polished dinner spot occupies a comfortable River Street room with an unusually deep wine and cocktail list for a town this size. The kitchen draws on Mediterranean, Italian, and Middle Eastern traditions — wood-fired pizzas, elk dishes, handmade pasta, and Mediterranean scallops that regulars plan return trips around. Manistee Riverwalk
A 1.5-mile paved riverside path that runs from the Origins sculptures at Douglas Park east through downtown, passing the Victorian commercial district, the breweries, and the SS City of Milwaukee before ending near the marina. Flat, accessible, and pleasant at any pace — locals run it in the morning and visitors walk it with coffee in the afternoon. The stretch between the river and the brick storefronts is genuinely pretty.
Orchard Beach State Park Loop
An easy 1.9-mile loop through forested bluffs above Lake Michigan at Orchard Beach State Park, north of town. The trail winds through second-growth hardwoods with occasional bluff views, birdsong, and enough solitude even in peak season that it feels removed from the beach crowds. Best combined with time on the park's swimming beach before or after.

Vogue Theatre
A 1938 art-deco movie house on River Street, restored and run by a volunteer organization that programs first-run films alongside classic revival screenings. The main house seats 187 with updated projection and sound; a smaller screening room takes 45. It's the kind of neighborhood cinema that larger cities have been losing for decades, and Manistee has managed to keep.
Ramsdell Regional Center for the Arts
The Ramsdell Theatre's performing arts program — live theater, classical concerts, Met Opera Live in HD broadcasts, and art exhibitions in the 1903 building. The acoustics are genuinely excellent for a room this age, and the programming mixes touring productions with strong local companies. Manistee has a surprisingly active arts scene and the RRCA anchors most of it.
Landmarks & sights
Ramsdell Theatre
A Renaissance Revival opera house built in 1903 by lumber baron T.J. Ramsdell, with an ornate interior that still draws gasps — plaster detailing, balcony tiers, and acoustic warmth money can't replicate. James Earl Jones worked here as a stage carpenter and occasional actor in the early 1950s, performing Othello from this very stage. The building itself is the show, even before the curtain goes up.
S.S. City of Milwaukee
A 1930s Great Lakes rail-car ferry permanently moored on the Manistee River — the last surviving example of its class and a National Historic Landmark. Guided tours walk you through the engine room, crew quarters, and the car decks that once held railroad freight cars crossing Lake Michigan. In summer it doubles as an overnight bed and breakfast; in October it becomes one of Michigan's best haunted attractions.
