The Rookery
The downtown burger institution that has been feeding Macon since the mid-1970s, with a patio, a long craft beer list, and walls layered in Capricorn Records and Allman Brothers history. The burgers are thick, hand-formed, and consistently excellent, and the outdoor courtyard stays lively well into the evening. An essential first-night stop.

Amerson River Park
Seven miles of paved multi-use trails through an oxbow of the Ocmulgee River, winding between stands of river oak and open meadows with the water visible from much of the route. Stroller and wheelchair accessible throughout, and genuinely peaceful even on busy days. The most popular trail in Macon by a wide margin, and justifiably so.
Ocmulgee National Monument Loop
A 3.6-mile trail threading through the grounds of Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park, linking the mound sites through forest, wetland, and open grassland along the river bluff. The route passes the Great Temple Mound, the funeral mound, and several smaller earthworks, making it as historically layered as any trail in Georgia. Easy terrain with a few mound climbs and exceptional wildlife along the water edge.

The Allman Brothers Band Museum at The Big House
The Tudor-style house where Duane, Gregg, Berry, and their extended family lived and made music during the band's formative years, now a museum with an extraordinary collection of guitars, stage gear, photographs, and personal artifacts. It is the most emotionally direct music museum in Georgia and routinely draws visitors from across the world. The house itself — the communal rooms, the layout, the scale — tells the story as much as the objects do.
Hargray Capitol Theatre
A beautifully restored 1,000-capacity historic theater in the center of downtown, anchoring the revival of Second Street with a calendar that mixes national touring acts, local artists, and the occasional comedy show. The room has excellent acoustics, a full bar, open floor, and a balcony with good sightlines from every position. The staff are consistently praised as among the friendliest in the region.
Landmarks & sights
Hay House
An 18,000-square-foot Italian Renaissance Revival mansion completed in the 1850s, filled with then-cutting-edge technology including speaking tubes, indoor plumbing, and a rooftop cupola with city views. The guided tour covers four floors and moves between the ornate formal rooms and the mechanics behind them. It is the finest antebellum house museum in Georgia and worth the full tour time.
Cannonball House
A Greek Revival planter's townhouse named for the Union artillery round that landed inside during the Civil War, with the cannonball still on display. Guided tours walk through the main house and a remarkably preserved two-story brick kitchen and servants' quarters, giving a grounded account of who actually lived and worked here. Less grand than Hay House and more revealing for it.
