Mount Elbert Northeast Ridge Trail
The standard route up Colorado's highest peak at 14,433 feet — a straightforward Class 1 hike on a well-maintained trail through pine forest, then tundra, then the broad summit ridge. The top is the highest point in the Rockies, which lands differently once you're standing there. The northeast trailhead on the north fork of Lake Creek Road is the most popular starting point.
Mineral Belt Trail
An 11.6-mile paved loop that encircles Leadville and passes through the heart of the historic mining district — scattered headframes, mine tailings, interpretive panels, and views of the Sawatch and Mosquito ranges that open up in every direction. Equally good on foot, bike, or snowshoes in winter.

Leadville Colorado & Southern Railroad
A 2.5-hour round-trip excursion on a vintage diesel train that climbs from Leadville's historic depot up through San Isabel National Forest, with views of Mount Massive and Mount Elbert filling the windows at the turnaround elevation near 11,000 feet. The lounge car is the most comfortable option; the open observation platform is the most scenic.
The Legendary Silver Dollar Saloon
Colorado's oldest continuously operating saloon, open since 1879 — the original back bar, a pressed tin ceiling, and walls covered with photographs from a century of Leadville characters. The food program has evolved to include whiskey-glazed wings and lamb French dip alongside the classic bar fare, but the reason to come is the room itself and the history embedded in it.

Tabor Opera House
Built in 1879 by silver baron Horace Tabor in just 100 days, this National Trust Historic Treasure is one of the best-preserved Victorian opera houses west of the Mississippi. The costumed tours walk through original stage scenery, dressing rooms, and the layered history of a building that hosted touring acts when Leadville was Colorado's second-largest city.
National Mining Hall of Fame & Museum
The country's only national museum dedicated to mining, with a hands-on replica underground mine complete with tracks, minecarts, and the genuine dark-and-cold atmosphere of a working drift. Above ground, the exhibits range from mineralogy to the human story of hardrock mining across the American West. The artifact collection is larger and more varied than the building's exterior suggests.
