Hickory Nut Falls Trail
The most-walked trail in the Chimney Rock park system leads to the base of a 404-foot waterfall—one of the tallest east of the Mississippi. The 1.4-mile round trip is genuine beginner territory, with benches placed throughout, but the payoff at the end doesn't feel like something easy trails usually deliver. The falls were filmed in both Dirty Dancing and The Last of the Mohicans.
Exclamation Point and Skyline Trail
The more demanding route inside Chimney Rock State Park that climbs past the chimney itself, through the Opera Box overlook, and up to Exclamation Point—the highest vantage in the park at 2,480 feet. The 2.8-mile loop involves sustained stair climbing and uneven rock, but the sequential reveal of different view angles makes every push feel earned.

Lake Lure Tours
Covered pontoon boat tours that cruise Lake Lure with a narrated history of the gorge, the 1927 inn, and the Dirty Dancing filming locations visible from the water. Tours run every 90 minutes from 11am and require at least six passengers to depart—call ahead rather than just showing up and hoping. Also rents kayaks, canoes, and SUPs by the hour.
Canopy Ridge Farm
A 60-acre zip line park in Hickory Nut Gorge with six lines, the longest stretching 1,000 feet and topping 35mph. Voted best zip line in the US by Newsweek readers, and the guides have a reputation for being genuinely funny and safety-obsessed rather than just going through the motions. Ages 2 and up—this is one of the rare adventure activities that works for actual small children.

Chimney Rock at Chimney Rock State Park
A 535-million-year-old, 315-foot granite monolith that you can reach by hiking 499 steps or riding the elevator cut into the rock itself. From the top you get a 75-mile panorama that sweeps across Hickory Nut Gorge, Lake Lure, and the Blue Ridge foothills. The park reopened after Hurricane Helene and now requires advance reservations—don't show up unannounced.
The 1927 Lake Lure Inn and Spa
The historic inn where Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey stayed while filming Dirty Dancing, set on the lakefront with the Veranda Restaurant and a full-service spa. The Inn has hosted F. Scott Fitzgerald and hosted the cast and crew through the production of multiple films shot in Hickory Nut Gorge. Even if you're not staying, the grounds, dock, and lobby bar make it a worthwhile stop.
