Philosopher's Path
A roughly two-kilometer canal-side stroll through northern Higashiyama, linking Ginkaku-ji to Nanzen-ji past small temples, cafes, and cherry trees. It is flat, shaded, and easy, the classic Kyoto contemplative walk that gives the route its name. Lovely in cherry-blossom season and quietly pretty the rest of the year.
Kamogawa River
The grassy riverbanks running the length of downtown, a flat, open promenade where locals jog, picnic, and cool off on stepping stones. It is the city's living room, not a wilderness trail, but the easiest scenic walk you can do straight from downtown. Best at golden hour when the riverside fills up.

The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto
A modern-art museum by the Heian Shrine torii in northern Higashiyama, strong on twentieth-century Japanese painting, crafts, and ceramics. It is calm and rarely crowded, a thoughtful counterweight to the temple circuit. Good for an art-leaning afternoon near Nanzen-ji.

Fushimi Inari Taisha
The head shrine of all Inari shrines, with thousands of vermilion torii gates threaded up the wooded slope of Mount Inari. The tunnels of gates near the base draw the crowds, but the trail keeps climbing for a couple of hours past quieter sub-shrines and a city overlook. Go for the gates; stay for the walk.
Kinkaku-ji
The Golden Pavilion, a Zen temple whose top two floors are sheathed in gold leaf and mirrored in the pond it sits beside. It is a one-loop garden walk rather than a building you enter, so the whole visit is short. Come for the reflection shot, which lands best on a still, clear morning.
