Perseverance Trail
Three-mile round-trip up Gold Creek valley behind downtown — gentle climb on an old miners' road past the abandoned Perseverance Mine ruins to Silverbow Basin. Easy-to-moderate, dog-friendly, and the trail locals walk most often.
Mount Roberts Trail
Four-and-a-half-mile climb from the Basin Road trailhead to the 3,819-foot summit of Mount Roberts — switchbacks through hemlock forest to the Tramway midstation at 1,800 feet, then alpine to the top. Moderate to strenuous; the climb starts near sea level.

Alaska State Museum
State-run museum at the south edge of downtown — Native art, Russian-America artifacts, the actual Eagle from the Old Russian Bishop's House, and rotating contemporary shows. Modern building, well-lit, easy half-day.
Sealaska Heritage Walter Soboleff Building
Three-story Tlingit-Haida-Tsimshian cultural center on Franklin Street — a recreated clan house inside, gallery of contemporary Native art, and a research library. The locals' recommendation over the State Museum when forced to pick one.
Landmarks & sights
Mendenhall Glacier
The half-mile-wide river of ice that is the reason most people fly to Juneau — 12 miles long, calving icebergs into Mendenhall Lake, and accessible by a half-mile walk from the visitor center. Receding fast; the view is different than it was even five years ago.
Alaska State Capitol
Marble-and-limestone capitol on 4th Street, the only state capitol without a dome, finished in 1931 and still used by the legislature. Free guided tours run Monday through Friday June through late September; the marble lobby alone is worth a peek anytime the doors are open.
