The Englert Theatre
A restored 1912 vaudeville house on Washington Street that now runs as a nonprofit stage more than 200 nights a year - touring songwriters, comedy, author talks, and the anchor of the town's festival calendar. There isn't a bad seat in the room.
FilmScene at The Chauncey
Nonprofit cinema in the Chauncey tower screening first-run indies, restored classics, and cult late-nights, with a proper bar in the lobby. It's the rainy-day answer downtown, and outdoor screenings move the films outside in summer.
Landmarks & sights
Old Capitol Museum
The gold-domed 1840s building where Iowa became a state, now a free museum at the center of the University of Iowa's Pentacrest. Restored legislative chambers and a famous reverse spiral staircase inside; the lawn around it is the town's front yard.
Iowa Avenue Literary Walk
A block-and-a-half of bronze panels set into the Iowa Avenue sidewalks honoring dozens of writers with Iowa ties - Kurt Vonnegut, Flannery O'Connor, Tennessee Williams among them. It's the UNESCO City of Literature's most walkable monument.
