Ernie Maxwell Scenic Trail
The most family-accessible trail in the Idyllwild area, Ernie Maxwell runs 5 miles through shaded conifer forest with views of Tahquitz Rock from below. The grade is gentle and the forest canopy is dense, making it pleasant even in summer heat. It's a walk rather than a climb, which is the point.

Tahquitz Rock (Lily Rock)
One of the most storied rock climbing destinations in Southern California, Tahquitz Rock rises nearly 500 feet above the forest on the edge of the San Jacinto Wilderness. The 'Open Book' (5.9) is among the most famous multipitch routes in the country, and the rock drew the architects of American free climbing in the 1950s and 1960s. Non-climbers can see it clearly from the Fern Valley area.
Idyllwild Nature Center
A small nature education center on the edge of town with an easy 2.5-mile trail loop through pine and cedar forest. It's the lowest-commitment way to get into the San Jacinto mountains for visitors who aren't ready for the longer wilderness hikes.
