Black Elk Peak
The highest summit east of the Rockies at 7,242 feet, capped by a stone fire tower, on a roughly 6 to 7-mile loop from Sylvan Lake about 20 minutes south. The summit panorama takes in the Cathedral Spires and stretches toward Wyoming on a clear day. The marquee hard hike of the Black Hills, reachable as a day trip from town.
Flume Trail
A historic trail along the bed of the 1880s Rockerville Flume near Sheridan Lake, where you walk the carved water channel and pass through a rock tunnel blasted for the old mining water line. The popular short version is a few miles round-trip from the Sheridan Lake area; the full route runs much longer. Flat, shaded, and rich with mining history.

1880 Train - Hill City Depot
The Black Hills Central Railroad, the oldest continuously operating standard-gauge steam railroad in the country, running a narrated two-hour round trip between Hill City and Keystone behind vintage steam locomotives. The slow roll past Black Elk Peak and old mining grades is the experience. A family favorite and the town's signature attraction.
The Museum @ Black Hills Institute
A small Main Street museum packing over a thousand fossils and research-quality replicas, run by the institute that excavated the famous T. rex specimens Sue, Stan, and Trix. The compact rooms let you stand beside real bones and full skeletons. The standout indoor stop in town and a hit with kids.
Landmarks & sights
Mount Rushmore National Memorial
The four-president granite carving, about 25 minutes east of Hill City and the closest of the big anchors. The half-mile Presidential Trail loops directly under the faces for the angle the main terrace misses. The Sculptor's Studio lays out how Borglum's crew actually carved it.
Crazy Horse Memorial
The in-progress mountain carving of the Lakota leader, about 15 minutes south, paired with the Indian Museum of North America and a Native arts campus. The face is complete; the arm and horse are still raw rock. Come for the scale and the cultural exhibits at the base.
