Weinstube Schnitzelbank
A former cooper's workshop on Bauamtsgasse repurposed as a candlelit wine tavern, with the original workbenches still serving as tables. Philosophenweg (Philosopher's Walk)
A hillside path on the north bank of the Neckar, running from Neuenheim up and along a sun-warmed terrace with classic views of the castle, Altstadt, and river below. The warm microclimate on this south-facing slope allows Mediterranean plants — Spanish broom, Portuguese cherry, Japanese mistletoe — to grow weeks ahead of the valley floor. The full path is about 2 km and accessible on foot from the Old Bridge.
Heiligenberg Summit Trail
A forested ascent to the 440-meter Heiligenberg summit, passing St. Michael's monastery ruins, a Roman temple site, and emerging at the Thingstätte amphitheater. The trail from the Philosophenweg junction is about 2 km with moderate elevation gain through mixed forest. The top rewards with wide views over the Neckar valley and a strange encounter with a 1930s monument now used for summer concerts.

Heidelberger Bergbahn (Mountain Railway)
A two-section funicular railway running from Kornmarkt in the Altstadt up through the castle to the Molkenkur viewpoint, then continuing to the Königstuhl summit. The lower section, opened in 1890, is the practical way to reach the castle without the steep walk. A round trip to the summit covers 560 meters of elevation through forest.
Karlstorbahnhof
A cultural center and concert venue housed in a former train station south of the Altstadt, with a main hall for live music and DJ events, a smaller theater space for dance and spoken-word performances, and an art-house cinema. The program leans independent and eclectic — international touring acts, local experimental music, film series outside the mainstream. One of the few venues in the city with a consistent year-round program.

Heidelberger Schloss
The defining ruin of the German Romantic imagination — red sandstone towers and broken gables clinging to a forested hillside above the Neckar, with the river valley spreading out below. The castle complex also holds the German Pharmacy Museum and the world's largest wine barrel (220,000-litre capacity). You can walk up from the Altstadt or take the Bergbahn funicular from Kornmarkt.
Alte Brücke (Karl Theodor Bridge)
An 18th-century sandstone bridge spanning the Neckar, framed by twin gate towers and guarded by a bronze monkey sculpture at its south end. The crossing gives the most photographed view of the castle and Altstadt skyline in the city. The bridge monkey's mirror — a folk tradition — is supposedly touched for luck by students before exams.
