Kent Trails
A 15-mile paved non-motorized trail following abandoned railroad grades through six municipalities from John Ball Park to Byron Center. The railroad-grade routing means almost no elevation change — flat, shaded in stretches, and genuinely usable for running, cycling, and skating. The stretch between Millennium Park and John Ball Park is the most scenic and the easiest to use as a half-day out-and-back.
Millennium Park
One of the largest urban parks in the country at 1,500 acres, Millennium Park sits southwest of downtown along the Grand River and offers 18 miles of trails through wetlands, rolling terrain, and riverside corridors. The swimming beach on the lake is a local summer fixture, and the trail system is rarely crowded because the park is large enough to absorb the visitor load. Good for easy half-day walks as well as longer cycling loops.

Pyramid Scheme
A downtown rock venue that doubles as a serious pinball arcade — over 30 machines along one wall of the bar, free to play with a drink purchase. The music calendar runs indie, punk, and metal with a mix of national touring acts and local headliners, and the room is small enough that you're always within 30 feet of the stage. Grand Rapids African American Museum and Archives
A small museum in the heart of downtown that documents the history and contributions of West Michigan's Black community — less well-known than it deserves to be given the depth of the collection. The archive holds oral histories, photographs, and primary documents that aren't available anywhere else. The staff are often available to talk through the exhibits in a way that larger institutions can't offer.

Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park
A 158-acre indoor-outdoor sculpture garden that earns its reputation as one of the best in the country — not just in Michigan. The permanent collection mixes Rodin bronzes with large-scale outdoor works by Claes Oldenburg and Mark di Suvero, while the tropical conservatory turns January visits into something genuinely luxurious. Plan two to three hours minimum; the walk through the Japanese garden at the far end is the part most visitors cut short and regret.
Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum
A genuinely compelling presidential museum that benefits from a complicated subject — Ford's pardon of Nixon and the Watergate era get serious, unvarnished treatment rarely seen in museums of this type. The reconstructed Oval Office is the expected crowd-pleaser, but the exhibit on the fall of Saigon is the one that stays with you. Sits right on the Grand River with a pleasant riverside walk outside.
