Wolf Rock and Chimney Rock Trail
A 3.8-mile moderate loop in Catoctin Mountain Park that visits two of the best rock formations in the Maryland mountains — Wolf Rock, a chaotic tumble of quartzite boulders, and Chimney Rock, a narrow outcrop with views across the Catoctin Valley. The trail runs through old-growth hardwood and mountain laurel that blooms in late May and early June. This is the hike locals take visitors to first.
Cunningham Falls Upper Loop
A 2.5-mile moderate loop in Cunningham Falls State Park that leads to the largest cascading waterfall in Maryland — a 78-foot series of rapids over lichen-covered rocks in a hemlock and hardwood hollow. The upper loop from the Houck Area adds distance and delivers more solitude than the shorter lower trail, which gets crowded on weekends.

McClintock Distilling
A Carroll Creek-area craft distillery producing certified-organic vodka, gin, rye, and bourbon from grain to glass in downtown Frederick. The back bar uses the house spirits in seasonal cocktails made with locally sourced ingredients, and the tasting room is one of the more genuinely welcoming spaces in the city. Tours show the full distilling process and are more interesting than the usual winery-style pour.
Tenth Ward Distilling Company
A downtown Patrick Street distillery producing an unusually eclectic portfolio — absinthe, smoked bourbon, Genever gin, Maryland rye, and seasonal canned cocktails alongside their standards. The tasting room is one of the more adventurous drinking experiences in Frederick, and the rotating cocktail menu gives regulars a reason to come back. If you've never had absinthe done properly, this is a good introduction.

Carroll Creek Linear Park
A 1.3-mile landscaped canal that threads through the heart of downtown Frederick, lined with brick paths, pedestrian bridges, water gardens, and a 350-seat amphitheater. On warm evenings it functions as the social spine of the city — breweries, distilleries, and restaurants open directly onto it, and free outdoor concerts run on summer weekends. This is the walk to take on the first day.
National Museum of Civil War Medicine
A 7,000-square-foot museum on East Patrick Street dedicated entirely to the medical story of the Civil War — evacuation procedures, field surgery, nursing innovations, and the lasting changes to American healthcare the conflict produced. Frederick was a major hospital town for both sides after Antietam, so the local context is unusually rich. This is a genuinely different experience from the big battlefield parks.
