The slot passage requires some scrambling and is tight enough to feel genuinely adventurous despite the trail's short length. It rewards the effort precisely because of — not despite — those brief technical sections.
San Elijo Lagoon Santa Inez Trail
A 2.4-mile round-trip through the heart of the San Elijo Lagoon ecological reserve, looping through the varied habitats of San Diego County's largest coastal wetland. The trail passes through riparian corridor, coastal sage scrub, and marsh edge — a range of ecosystems in a short distance. Birdwatching is exceptional, particularly in the morning hours.

Surfing at Swami's and Moonlight Beach
Encinitas has two distinct surf cultures in close proximity — Swami's, the serious reef break favored by experienced surfers, and Moonlight Beach, the more forgiving beach break where beginners and intermediate surfers feel comfortable. Several surf schools operate at Moonlight and lessons are available year-round. The bluff above Swami's is one of the best free spectator spots for watching high-level surfing.

The coastal gardens of Swami Paramahansa Yogananda's 1937 retreat above Swami's surf break — a series of tiered gardens with koi ponds, waterfalls, lotus flowers, and ocean views that look directly down to one of the most respected surf breaks in North County. Open to the public for quiet contemplation, the gardens are unusually serene given how close they sit to Coast Hwy 101.
San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve
San Diego County's largest coastal wetland reserve at nearly 900 acres, supporting over 295 bird species and more than 300 plant species across 7 miles of walking trails. The lagoon marks the boundary between Cardiff-by-the-Sea and Solana Beach and provides a remarkable ecological counterpoint to the developed coast on either side. Birding here is exceptional in winter and during fall migration.
