Dubois Badlands Trail
A roughly three-mile loop through the banded red-and-tan badlands that sit right at the edge of town, climbing onto flat-topped benches with views back over Dubois and the Wind River valley. It is the closest real hike to town and the one to do at golden hour when the rock lights up.
Jade Lakes Trail
A high, well-marked hike from the Brooks Lake area to the Upper and Lower Jade Lakes, following Jade Creek and tying into the Continental Divide Trail under the volcanic cliffs of the divide. National Museum of Military Vehicles
An enormous private museum just east of town holding one of the largest collections of restored U.S. military vehicles on public display, hundreds of tanks, jeeps, and artillery pieces staged across a 160,000-square-foot hall from the Spanish-American War to today. It is wildly out of scale for a town this size and easily a half-day, whatever your interest in the subject.
Headwaters Arts and Conference Center
A timber-and-stone events hall that serves as the town's main venue for concerts, art shows, workshops, and community gatherings. Check what is on while you are in town; a small-town show in a room like this is the kind of evening you do not plan for but remember.
Landmarks & sights
National Bighorn Sheep Center
Small interpretive center on Ramshorn that explains why Dubois sits beside the largest wintering Rocky Mountain bighorn herd in the Lower 48. Full-scale dioramas and mounts cover the sheep's biology and the Whiskey Mountain range just out of town, and in the cold months the staff run guided viewing trips up onto the mountain.
Dubois Museum
The Wind River Historical Center's main museum, a cluster of restored cabins and indoor exhibits tracing the Upper Wind River valley from Precambrian geology through the Shoshone presence to the tie-hack logging era. The displays on the hand-hewn railroad ties that floated down the river are the local through-line you will not get anywhere else.
