Southwind Nature Trail

Scenic Overlook Trail (Windmill Pasture)
A backcountry trail across the preserve's big pasture to a high overlook, the prime spot to watch the free-ranging bison herd graze against an ocean of tallgrass. There is no shade out here, so it rewards preparation.

Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve Visitor Center
The free gateway to eleven thousand acres of protected tallgrass prairie, with exhibits, a film, ranger programs, and the departure point for the van tour into bison country. Stop here first for current bison locations and trail conditions.
Prairie PastTimes
An artists' cooperative on Broadway representing dozens of Flint Hills makers, selling locally made art, pottery, jewelry, and crafts steps from the courthouse. Everything is made by area artists, so it is a real local-art stop rather than tourist trinkets.
Landmarks & sights
Chase County Courthouse
The oldest courthouse still in use in Kansas, a French Renaissance pile of limestone and walnut topped by a mansard tower, with a three-story walnut spiral staircase you can actually climb. It is the anchor of the whole town and a genuine architectural surprise out on the prairie.
Spring Hill Ranch (Z Bar) Historic Home & Barn
The limestone mansion and enormous stone barn at the heart of the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, the headquarters of a cattle ranch built when this was open range. Ranger-led house tours run seasonally, and the barn doubles as the trailhead into the prairie.
