A breakfast institution in tiny Silver Gate, serving from a log cabin since the 1930s, known for homemade hash browns, grilled mountain trout and house pancakes. It is the classic start to a Lamar Valley wildlife morning, the kind of place that has fed three generations of park travelers. Worth the few extra minutes up the road.

Trout Lake Trail
A short but steep climb to a serene cutthroat-trout lake ringed by forest just inside the park's northeast corner. The grunt up is brief and the payoff is a quiet alpine lake where otters and rising trout are common. The best quick leg-stretcher in the area for the effort.
Pebble Creek Trail
A longer valley trail starting near the park's northeast entrance, following Pebble Creek through forest and open meadow with big mountain walls above. The first few miles make an excellent half-day out-and-back through prime wildlife country. Quieter than the famous Lamar pullouts and a chance to walk into the scenery rather than watch it from the road.
Things to do
Cooke City Montana Museum
A small local museum telling the story of the town, Colter Pass and Silver Gate through exhibits on mining, the Beartooth Highway and hard mountain winters. An outdoor section displays heavy mining gear, an old cabin and an outhouse beneath Republic Mountain. The best rainy-hour stop and a quick primer on how people scratched out a life up here.
Beartooth Highway
The legendary high-mountain road that climbs from Cooke City over the Beartooth Plateau toward Red Lodge, topping out near eleven thousand feet among alpine tundra and snowfields. Often called the most scenic drive in America, it is a destination in itself, all switchbacks, glacial lakes and big drop-offs. A bucket-list drive when the snow lets it open.

Lamar Valley
The broad glacial valley just inside Yellowstone's northeast gate, so thick with wildlife it is called America's Serengeti. Bison herds graze the flats while wolves, grizzlies, pronghorn and bighorn move across the slopes, all visible from the road with patience and a spotting scope. The single best place in the lower forty-eight to watch wild animals at scale.
Pilot and Index Peaks Overlook
A roadside overlook just east of town on the Beartooth Highway where two sharp granite spires, Pilot and Index Peaks, rise in a distinctive twin silhouette above the forest. It is the iconic view of the Absaroka-Beartooth country and an easy stop straight off the highway. Best in clear morning or evening light when the peaks catch fire.
