Grano Arso
Chef Joel Gargano's Italian kitchen occupies the 1902 Chester Savings Bank building on Main Street, its high ceilings and original vault giving the room a theatrical grandeur. The pasta is made from scratch daily — the 'burnt wheat' dough the name references comes from Puglia — and the seasonal menus pull from local Connecticut farms. Gargano competed on Beat Bobby Flay.

Cockaponset Trail and Pattaconk Loop
The signature Chester hike: a 7.5-mile route from Route 148 in Chester to Old County Road in Haddam and back, with 800 feet of cumulative elevation. The trail passes Pattaconk Reservoir, Collier's Hut, a series of boulder-strewn ravines, and several stream crossings. Connecticut's second-largest state forest means you'll have long stretches of genuine solitude even on a weekend.
Blue Cockaponset Trail
A 5.2-mile moderately trafficked loop in Cockaponset State Forest that circles a lake and traverses mixed hardwood forest with minimal technical difficulty. Good for all fitness levels and particularly beautiful in fall when the forest canopy turns. The lake views mid-loop are the payoff.

Goodspeed Opera House — Main Stage
One of the foremost musical theater houses in the United States, operating since 1963 in a six-story Victorian building on the Connecticut River in East Haddam. Over 250 musicals produced, 21 sent to Broadway, and the originating stage for Annie and Man of La Mancha. The April-to-December season spans world premieres and newly revived classics in a 398-seat house with extraordinary acoustics.
Chester Sunday Market
A weekly farmers market on Main Street every Sunday from 10 am to 1 pm, running from late spring through fall. Local produce, fresh fish, baked goods, a pizza truck, and live music make it the social heartbeat of the village on weekend mornings. The whole of Chester Main Street comes alive around it.
Landmarks & sights
Gillette Castle State Park
A 14,000-square-foot medieval-style stone fortress built by actor William Gillette — famous for his Sherlock Holmes portrayals — perched 200 feet above the Connecticut River. The grounds are open year-round with hiking trails along the old private railroad right-of-way, crossing trestles and stone-arch bridges. Castle tours run late May through Labor Day.
Chester-Hadlyme Ferry
One of the oldest continuously operating ferries in the United States, running since 1769 and designated a Connecticut landmark. The small cable-guided reaction ferry crosses the Connecticut River between Chester and the Hadlyme landing, with Gillette Castle looming on the far bluffs. Operates April through November.
