Coal Creek Trail
A flat, paved path that follows Coal Creek through Cedar City past several parks, making it the town's everyday walking, jogging, and biking route. It runs about 3.4 miles out and back and connects eastward to the Cedar Canyon trail for a longer outing. Easy, accessible, and good for an evening stroll with no elevation.
Cedar City C Trail
The steep climb up the face of Cedar Mountain to the big hillside letter overlooking town, a local rite of passage with a hard-earned payoff. It is short but strenuous, gaining real elevation fast and topping out at expansive views of the valley and Dixie National Forest. Best for those who want a workout and a panorama close to town.
Things to do
Utah Shakespeare Festival
The Tony-winning regional theater that made Cedar City a summer destination, staging Shakespeare and other plays in rotating repertory on the SUU campus from late spring into fall. Multiple productions run at once across indoor and open-air stages, plus free pre-show Greenshow entertainment. The single biggest reason visitors come, and worth planning a trip around.
Neil Simon Festival
A mid-summer theater festival staged at the Heritage Center in historic downtown, long the only company in the country devoted to the comedies of Neil Simon. It runs a tight July-into-August season of crowd-pleasing plays. A lighter, more intimate counterpart to the bigger Shakespeare festival across town.
Landmarks & sights
Frontier Homestead State Park Museum
The state museum of Iron County's pioneer and early iron-mining history, set on the north end of Main Street around a yard of wagons, a replica blast furnace, and the town's oldest standing house. Inside is one of the better horse-drawn vehicle collections in the West plus a steam shovel and caboose kids can climb into. Plan an hour or two; it pairs well with a downtown stroll.
Southern Utah Museum of Art
SUU's free art museum, its wave-like roofline modeled on the region's slot canyons, anchoring the Beverley Taylor Sorenson arts complex next to the Shakespeare theatres. The permanent collection centers on landscape painter Jimmie F. Jones, with rotating shows of regional and national work. An easy, no-cost cultural stop, and a genuinely good rainy-afternoon option.
