Big Butte Loop
An easy 1.3-mile loop on the open hill right above town, with a spur up to the whitewashed 'M' that Montana Tech students maintain. Exposed and quick, with full-circle views of the valley and the Divide.
Maud S Canyon Trail
The town's favorite hike-and-bike loop, a moderate four miles up the East Ridge into a wooded canyon that links onward to the Continental Divide trail. Sunset light in the canyon is the reason locals run it after work.
Things to do
World Museum of Mining
A 22-acre open-air museum on the Orphan Girl mine site, with 50-some buildings recreating a turn-of-century mining town plus a 100-foot headframe. The underground tour, descending into the actual mine, is the standout.
Mai Wah Museum
Two preserved buildings of Butte's once-large Chinatown, a former mercantile and noodle parlor now holding 2,500 artifacts of the city's Chinese community. It is the surviving heart of an immigrant history the town nearly erased.
Landmarks & sights
Berkeley Pit
A mile-long former open-pit copper mine now filled with rust-colored, acidic water that keeps rising each year. You walk through a tunnel to a viewing stand on the rim, and the scale of it lands harder in person than any photo.
Our Lady of the Rockies
A 90-foot statue of Mary built by out-of-work miners through the 1980s, perched on the Continental Divide 3,500 feet above town. The only way up is the official bus tour, which is half the experience for the volunteer-driver stories.
