Whitaker Point Trail (Hawksbill Crag)
The most-photographed viewpoint in Arkansas, Whitaker Point ends at a narrow sandstone crag that juts 200 feet above the valley floor with nothing but air below it. The trail itself is only 2.7 miles round-trip through hardwood forest, making the payoff-to-effort ratio unusually high. It ranks as the top-rated hike in the state on AllTrails for good reason.
Lost Valley Trail
A 2.3-mile loop along Clark Creek that packs in natural bridges, caves, cascades, and Eden Falls -- all in a narrow side canyon just off the main river near Ponca. It's the most complete beginner trail in the park, with enough variety to hold the attention of young children while still offering enough scrambling (including a cave crawl to see the falls fully) for adults. The NPS calls it the most frequent search-and-rescue location in the park, so slippery rocks deserve respect.

Buffalo Outdoor Center
The original outfitter on the upper Buffalo River, Buffalo Outdoor Center has been running float trips and cabin rentals in Ponca since 1976, only a few years after the Buffalo became the country's first national river. They handle canoe, kayak, and raft rentals with shuttles and are the most established operation for the Ponca to Kyle's Landing float, one of the most visually dramatic stretches on the river. Staff know current water levels and can steer you toward the right trip for the day's conditions.
Lost Valley Canoe & Lodging
A small family-owned outfitter in Ponca that has been equipping paddlers on the upper Buffalo for over 35 years, Lost Valley Canoe offers canoe, kayak, and raft rentals with vehicle shuttles and a handful of rustic cabins with hot tubs on the property. The operation is genuinely small and personal -- you're dealing with the owners, not a counter employee -- and their environmental ethic is evident in how they run the business.
Landmarks & sights
Roark Bluff
A sheer limestone wall stretching three-quarters of a mile along the Buffalo River at Steel Creek, Roark Bluff rises over 440 feet and is one of the longest exposed bluff faces on the entire river. Paddlers float directly beneath its striped orange-and-grey face, and campers at Steel Creek wake up with it filling the sky. It's the defining visual anchor of the upper river.
Big Bluff
At over 500 feet, Big Bluff is the tallest bluff on the Buffalo River and one of the most dramatic natural features in the Ozarks. A narrow ledge trail called the Goat Trail traverses its face roughly 350 feet above the river, offering stomach-dropping views that attract serious hikers from across the region. This is not the place for anyone nervous about exposure.
