Princeton, the Collegiate Peaks, and the Fourmile Recreation Area. The loop follows the historic Hack Road used from 1887 to 1918 to shuttle Midland Railroad passengers from the depot 400 feet above town. Interpretive signs along the way connect the scenery to the valley's railroad and mining history.
Ptarmigan Lake Trail
A 6.3-mile out-and-back from Cottonwood Pass Road into the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness, passing smaller ponds and a creek corridor before arriving at a high alpine lake ringed by talus and towering peaks. The steady 1,469-foot gain through pine forest and subalpine meadow is manageable for most fit hikers, and the destination lake is genuinely striking — blue water reflecting big peaks without the crowds of the 14er routes. Ptarmigan birds, which give the lake its name, are reliably spotted here.

The experience is half whitewater, half wilderness — the canyon walls close out the world and bighorn sheep watch from the granite above.
