It is manageable for most fitness levels and takes about an hour at an unhurried pace.
Noland Creek Trail
An old road grade following Noland Creek from a trailhead near the Road to Nowhere (Lakeview Drive) into the Smokies backcountry, at a very gentle grade that delivers backcountry distance without any scrambling. Creek crossings and old homesites along the way give it historical texture, and you can turn back whenever you like.

Whitewater Rafting at Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC)
The defining Bryson City adventure: about eight miles of Class II-III rapids on the Nantahala River with guided trips run by the NOC, which has shaped American whitewater culture since 1972. The dam-fed river runs cold and finishes on a technical rapid at Nantahala Falls, making it a genuine adventure that is still beginner-friendly. The center reopened its rivers in 2025 after rebuilding from Hurricane Helene.
Great Smoky Mountains Railroad
A scenic train excursion from Bryson City's historic depot, running through mountain valleys, over river bridges, and across the Fontana Lake trestle, one of the more genuinely beautiful rail journeys in the eastern United States. The Nantahala Gorge Excursion runs into the gorge itself, while the Tuckasegee Excursion covers a quieter river valley with a layover in Dillsboro.
