Mount Willard Trail
A 3.2-mile out-and-back classic from the AMC Highland Center — moderate 900-foot climb through forest to a dramatic cliff-edge viewpoint overlooking Crawford Notch in its full glacially-carved grandeur. One of the best effort-to-reward ratios in the entire White Mountains.
Arethusa Falls via Bemis Brook Trail
A 2.8-mile loop in Crawford Notch State Park leading to Arethusa Falls — New Hampshire's tallest single-drop waterfall at 200 feet — passing Bemis Brook's smaller cascades along the way. Optionally extended to Frankenstein Cliff for a demanding loop with cliff-top views.
Things to do
Mount Washington Cog Railway
The world's first mountain-climbing cog railway, built in 1869 — a 3-hour round trip on steam or biodiesel trains from the Marshfield Base Station to the summit of Mount Washington at 6,288 feet. The brakemen narrate the journey and point out landmarks; the 37.4% grade on Jacob's Ladder is still the second steepest in the world.
Bretton Woods Canopy Tour
Nine ziplines, two sky bridges, and three rappels through the White Mountain forest — with one line stretching 830 feet and platforms 165 feet above the forest floor. The gondola ride to the top of the course makes it accessible regardless of fitness level, and the guides are consistently excellent.
Landmarks & sights
Omni Mount Washington Resort
A 1902 National Historic Landmark resort hotel — 900-foot-long white facade, red-roofed towers, and Spanish Renaissance interiors set against a wall of the Presidential Range. Site of the 1944 Bretton Woods International Monetary Conference that established the post-WWII financial order. Even if you're not a guest, the lobby, veranda, and grounds are worth an hour.
Crawford Notch State Park
A 5,775-acre state park carving a dramatic glacially-carved pass through the White Mountains along Route 302 — cliffs, waterfalls, beaver ponds, and trailheads to a dozen peaks all accessible from the highway. The park anchors the southern end of the Bretton Woods area.
