Starlight Theatre Restaurant & Saloon
The de facto community center of the Terlingua ghost town, set in a restored historic building with open-air walls, live music on weekend nights, and a menu running from antelope tenders and quail to brisket tacos and the Diego Burger — named a top-50 Texas burger by Texas Monthly. The social scene starts building in the late afternoon and peaks after 8 PM when the music begins.
La Kiva Restaurant & Bar
An underground bar and restaurant carved from native sandstone boulders along FM-170 west of the ghost town, opened in 1981 with redwood-slab tables, burl thrones, and a partially subterranean layout that makes it feel like dining inside a West Texas cave. The menu runs Tex-Mex comfort food and grilled meats, and the bar is one of the most memorable rooms in all of Big Bend country.

Lost Mine Trail
The top-rated trail in Big Bend on AllTrails, a 4.5-mile out-and-back that climbs steadily from Pine Canyon Junction in the Chisos to a saddle ridge with sweeping views of Casa Grande peak, the Basin, and the desert far below. The trail is accessible enough for fit hikers of most levels and scenic enough to justify the entire drive to Big Bend — if you only do one hike, this is it.
The Window Trail
A 5.6-mile out-and-back from the Chisos Basin trailhead that descends 800 feet through a narrowing canyon slot to 'The Window' — a V-shaped rock pour-off overlooking the Chihuahuan Desert below. The trail goes down on the way out, which means the climb back up is where the work happens; plan the return legs accordingly. The pour-off view at sunset is one of the park's most photographed moments.

Far Flung Outdoor Center River Trips
The region's oldest and most trusted full-service outfitter, operating since 1976 out of a compound on FM-170 near Study Butte, offering guided canoe and raft trips through Santa Elena Canyon, Boquillas Canyon, and the Lower Canyons as well as Jeep tours, ATV excursions, and night-sky programs. The guides are the most knowledgeable Big Bend interpreters working in the field — the river trips in particular combine physical adventure with deep geological and ecological education.
Big Bend Dark Sky Stargazing
Big Bend National Park is a certified International Dark Sky Park with some of the lowest light pollution readings in the contiguous United States, making unaided stargazing from virtually anywhere in the park — the Chisos Basin, Rio Grande Village, or the wide-open desert pulls-offs — a transformative experience. The Milky Way is visible to the naked eye on most clear nights, and shooting stars are common.

Santa Elena Canyon
Where the Rio Grande cuts a narrow slot through the Mesa de Anguila limestone plateau, leaving 1,500-foot sheer canyon walls rising straight out of the river — the defining image of Big Bend and one of the most dramatic canyon views in North America. The short nature trail from the parking area crosses Terlingua Creek, climbs a staircase cut into the canyon wall, and descends to the river's edge between walls so close and tall they block the sky.
Chisos Basin
A high-desert bowl at 5,400 feet elevation enclosed by the Chisos Mountains — the only mountain range entirely within a U.S. national park — with the Window's V-notch as its focal point and trailheads for most of the park's signature hikes at its rim. The basin is the thermal and scenic heart of Big Bend: cooler than the desert floor, green with oak and pine, and surrounded on every side by dramatic volcanic peaks.
