Wind Wolves Preserve Tule Elk & Reflection Pond Loop
A 7-mile loop through California's largest private nature preserve that strings together the Tule Elk Trail, Reflection Pond Trail and San Emigdio Canyon return. The first mile from The Crossing picnic area is almost certain to yield a sighting of the 200-strong elk herd; beyond that, the trail climbs through coastal scrub with wide-open views of converging ecosystems. Free entry and no permits required.
Kern River Parkway Trail
A 20-mile paved multi-use trail following the Kern River across Bakersfield from the foothills east of town to the western edge near Interstate 5. The stretch from Alfred Harrell Highway west through Hart Park is the most scenic—cottonwood canopy, river views and access to the park's fishing ponds. On weekday mornings it is nearly empty and feels like a different city.

Bakersfield Music Hall of Fame Live Shows
The live event arm of the Music Hall of Fame books tribute bands, original country acts and Bakersfield Sound revival shows in a 300-seat venue on Q Street that feels personal in a way that Dignity Health Arena cannot. The house specialty is homage—Rod Stewart, CCR, Fleetwood Mac and Aerosmith tributes rotate through—but local original acts fill the midweek calendar. The acoustics are excellent for the size.
Temblor Brewing Jazz & Music Nights
The Tuesday jazz series at Temblor Brewing is one of Bakersfield's most consistent weekly cultural events—live jazz from 6:30 to 10 pm in a taproom large enough to absorb the crowd without feeling cramped, with the full brewery menu running alongside. Weekend shows bring in blues, rock and Americana acts. It is the easiest way to have a Bakersfield evening that combines food, craft beer and live music.

Kern County Museum
An outdoor history complex of 56 historic buildings spread across several acres that tells Kern County's full story from the oil boom to the Dust Bowl to the Bakersfield Sound's birth. The Pioneer Village is the backbone, but the oil exhibition 'Black Gold' and the original radio studio where Buck Owens and Merle Haggard were recorded are the highlights that make it genuinely essential. Allow at least two hours.
California Living Museum (CALM Zoo)
A 14-acre zoo on Alfred Harrell Highway dedicated entirely to California-native wildlife—grizzly bears, black bears, condors, bobcats, mountain lions and a botanical garden of native flora. It is among the best-focused small zoos in California, with a clear mission that makes the collection feel curated rather than random. The condor aviary alone is worth the trip.
