Cedar Pass Lodge Restaurant
The only sit-down dining inside the park, in the historic lodge below the formations near the Ben Reifel center. The Sioux Indian taco on homemade frybread is the signature, and dessert is South Dakota State University ice cream. Worth it for the location and the frybread as much as the food.
Wagon Wheel Bar & Grill
A genuine small-town bar and grill in Interior, the closest food to the park's south entrance. Bison burgers and fresh pizza arrive among a cast of local regulars. More fun than the menu alone, and a fine reward after a Sage Creek or Castle Trail day.
Trails & outdoors
Notch Trail
The park's most memorable short hike, climbing a log ladder bolted to the canyon wall and traversing a ledge to the Notch, a cliff edge over the White River Valley. About a mile and a half round trip that feels like a real adventure. For hikers comfortable with heights and a bit of ladder work.
Door Trail
A short boardwalk through a natural break in the Badlands Wall, the Door, opening onto raw eroded terrain marked by numbered posts. The boardwalk stretch is fully accessible; beyond it you can wander into the moonscape as far as you like. Maximum scenery for minimal effort.
Things to do
Ben Reifel Visitor Center
The park's main visitor center near Cedar Pass, with sharp exhibits on geology, fossils, and wildlife, a park film, and a working fossil prep lab. Rangers here run programs and help plan your route. The indoor anchor of a park that is otherwise all outdoors.
Cedar Pass Lodge
The historic in-park lodge below the formations, with cabins, a gift shop, and the park's only restaurant, sitting right at the foot of the Wall. Even if you are not staying, the porch and grounds are a pleasant place to regroup between hikes. The closest thing the park has to a hub.
Landmarks & sights
Big Badlands Overlook
The first big view most people get, just inside the northeast entrance, where the prairie suddenly drops into a maze of eroded spires and canyons. There is informative signage and a short walk to the rim for an even bigger drop-off view. The classic first stop to orient yourself to the park.
Pinnacles Overlook
The highest overlook on the Badlands Loop Road, near the western Pinnacles entrance, with a broad panorama over the formations and grassland. It is the park's favorite sunset spot, when the spires light up orange and pink. Best saved for the end of the day.
