A Tasca
A small, no-reservation tavern on Rua do Aljube in central Ponta Delgada that draws most of the island's repeat visitors. The menu leans on Azorean staples — sesame-crusted ahi tuna with local yam, blood sausage with pineapple, alheira — with tight execution and honest portions. The queue outside is the reliable indicator that it is working.
Petiscaria O Calheta
A modern petiscaria (tapas bar) in Ponta Delgada serving seasonal share plates built around island produce, from aged São Jorge cheese boards to lightly dressed local fish. The room has nine terracotta pendant lamps, one for each island, and a small terracotta bar where dishes are handed across. Dinner only, closed Sundays and Mondays.

PR3 SMI – Vista do Rei to Sete Cidades
A descent from the caldera rim at Vista do Rei viewpoint down to the village of Sete Cidades beside the twin lakes. The trail follows the crater ridge, passes through hydrangea-lined hedgerows, and drops steadily through farmland and fern slopes into the lakeside village. The view changes completely from overhead panorama to enclosed lakeside as you descend.
PRC2 SMI – Praia to Lagoa do Fogo
An 11 km trail ascending from the south-coast village of Praia through forest to the crater rim of Lagoa do Fogo, with the lake appearing as the forest thins near the summit. The route transitions from coastal farmland to volcanic heath and is one of the few trails on São Miguel that actually reaches the water's edge of the crater lake. Rated moderate with 500 m of elevation gain.

Whale and Dolphin Watching (Futurismo)
Ponta Delgada is one of the world's most productive whale-watching locations, lying on a migratory corridor where sperm whales are resident year-round and blue, fin, and sei whales pass through in spring. Futurismo runs three-hour tours by catamaran or rigid inflatable, with onboard marine biologists, departing from Portas do Mar marina. 28 cetacean species have been recorded in the waters around São Miguel.
Poça da Dona Beija Thermal Baths
A set of outdoor geothermal pools in the Furnas valley, nested in dense tropical vegetation with iron-rich water held at 39°C. It is more intimate in scale than Terra Nostra but open late into the evening, and the after-dark visit — when steam rises through floodlit fern canopy — is the one to aim for. Maximum stay of 90 minutes enforced.

Lagoa das Sete Cidades
A pair of volcanic crater lakes — Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde — sitting inside a 5 km wide caldera on the western tip of São Miguel. The two lakes share nearly identical chemistry yet read as distinctly blue and green, separated by a narrow stone bridge. The surrounding crater rim and villages inside make this the island's most geographically dramatic stop.
Vista do Rei Viewpoint
The signature overlook perched on the Sete Cidades caldera rim at 544 metres, framing both crater lakes in a single panorama. Named for a king who visited and was so struck he returned, it gives the clearest overhead read of the blue-green divide. Best early morning before the tour buses arrive.
