Ta Karamanlidika tou Fani
Half deli, half taverna, this Monastiraki institution occupies a restored neoclassical building and pays tribute to the culinary traditions of the Greek Orthodox communities of Asia Minor who resettled in Athens. Pastourma (cured spiced beef), aged regional cheeses, handmade sausages, and cured hams fill the deli counters; the taverna side turns them into composed small plates. The curated Greek produce selection alone is worth a browse.
Seychelles
One of Athens' first bistronomy-style mezedopoleia, Seychelles occupies an early-19th-century building in Metaxourgeio and serves creative seasonal small plates drawn from traditional Greek ingredients — buffalo kavourmas from Lake Kerkini, apaki smoked pork from Crete, manouri cheese from northern Greece — recomposed into dishes that feel contemporary without being theatrical. The interior with exposed stone walls and mismatched furniture has a neighborhood ease that keeps locals returning.

Lycabettus Hill Summit Trail
The most dramatic urban hike in central Athens climbs 277 meters through a dense pine forest from Dexameni Square in Kolonaki to the summit Chapel of Agios Georgios and the panoramic viewing terrace. The 360-degree view from the top takes in the full Athens basin, the Saronic Gulf, the Acropolis below, Piraeus port, and the surrounding mountain ridges of Hymettus and Penteli. The Lycabettus Theatre is carved into the hillside partway up.
Philopappos Hill and Pnyx Loop
A pedestrian loop from the Thissio neighborhood that takes in Philopappos Hill, the Pnyx (where ancient Athenian citizens voted in the world's first democracy), and the Hill of the Nymphs in a single circuit. The Philopappos Monument at the summit gives a face-to-face view of the Parthenon across the valley that is widely considered the best angle on the Acropolis from anywhere in Athens — particularly at sunset. The trails pass through sparse pine and olive groves on paths that require no technical skill.

Athens & Epidaurus Festival at Odeon of Herodes Atticus
The annual Athens & Epidaurus Festival runs performances of ancient drama, opera, ballet, and major international music at the Herodeon each summer from late May through October. The combination of the 2,000-year-old Roman theater, the Acropolis lit overhead, and world-class programming makes this the most uniquely atmospheric event venue in Europe. Past performers have included Maria Callas, Leonard Cohen, Ella Fitzgerald, and Mikis Theodorakis.
SNFCC — Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center
The most significant cultural infrastructure project built in Greece in the post-war period, the SNFCC combines the new home of the Greek National Opera, the National Library of Greece, and 210,000 square meters of public park designed by Renzo Piano on the former Faliro Bay racecourse. Free events run year-round — concerts, theater, film screenings, festivals — making it one of Europe's few major cultural centers with an entirely accessible public programming model. The rooftop canal and Saronic Gulf views are worth the visit independent of any event.

Acropolis of Athens
The flat-topped rock rising 156 meters above Athens holds the greatest concentration of classical Greek architecture ever assembled in one place — the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, the Temple of Athena Nike, and the Propylaia gateway all within a single hilltop. The Parthenon's columns shift slightly outward to correct for optical illusion, a refinement that took decades to execute. Crowds are thickest between 10am and 3pm; the late-afternoon light turns the marble amber.
Acropolis Museum
The glass-and-concrete museum at the foot of the rock was built specifically to house what the Acropolis yielded — over 4,000 artifacts displayed in chronological order, with the top floor's Parthenon Gallery aligned on the exact orientation of the temple overhead and flooded with natural light. The original frieze sections held in Athens sit alongside cast replacements where pieces remain in the British Museum, making the case for their return visually and emotionally legible. Arguably the best purpose-built antiquities museum in Europe.
